WHITWELL WHEELS IN $1,000 AT CENTRAL ARIZONA RACEWAY
R.C. Whitwell piloted the Mike Tahtinen owned Tahtinen Racing Engines/Sierra Mining and Crushing LLC Late Model to the $1,000 win Saturday night at Central Arizona Raceway. Ricky Thornton Jr was able to take the win in the IMCA Modified feature, while Brian Stehr claimed the Dwarf Car main event and AJ Heubner claimed the X-Mod feature.
When mechanical woes sidelined Lonnie Parker Jr after his heat race, a 13-car Late Model field rolled out to battle for 30 laps and $1,000 to win the feature. RC Whitwell and Joey Moriarty sat on the front row. Whitwell jumped to the early lead and brought New Mexico’s Garrett Alberson with him. Whitwell started opening up a lead over Albertson and Moriarty when a cautions for spun cars bunched up the field. Whitwell would once again, distance himself from Albertson as Moriarty, James Laing, and Jeff Manka fought for positions. Whitwell cruised to the win over Albertson, Laing, Manka and Moriarty. Whitwell and Moriarty claimed the Heat Races.
With the addition of several cars from Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada; the IMCA Modified count hit 29 cars. Nate Warren and South Dakota’s Terry Haven led the field to the green flag. Warren grabbed the early lead, but it wasn’t long before Ricky Thornton Jr made his way up to challenge. Haven went off the top of the banking and fell back as Anthony Madrid moved into second and Tim Ward jumped to third. Madrid lost power for a caution and Ward challenged Thornton for the lead. Ward got to the inside of Thornton and slowed down to pull in the infield as he was losing water. Rookie driver Cody Graham inherited second and Brian Schultz took over third. Thornton took the win over Graham, Schultz, Canadian Dave Dease and Brad Whitfield. Thornton, Ward and Madrid took the Heat Race wins while the B-Main went to Tucson’s Chad Ayers.
The Dwarf Cars brought 30 cars to do battle on the Speedway. Greg Loper and Derek Hudson led the field to the green flag. Loper took the early lead and ran as he knew Brian Stehr would be on the charge from the 13th starting position. Loper drove off the top of turn 4 and Stehr took over the lead. Once Stehr took over Jeff Eckart moved into second. As the field was coming around to get the white flag, one of the machines lost an oil line and covered the track in oil causing a wreck on the front-stretch. Several attempts were made trying to make the track safe to finish, but with cars spinning out under caution, the race was called. Stehr claimed the win over Eckert, Tim Cotherman, Bill Drake Jr and Jim Hock. A very happy Drake claimed his first-career Heat Race win, while Loper and Ryan Henesey were the other winners. Stehr claimed the B-Main.
Brandon Farrington and Trevor Miller led the 22-car XMod feature event to the green flag. Farrington grabbed the early lead with Miller falling into second. AJ Heubner started picking his way to the front along with Jason George. Heubner got next to Farrington and claimed the lead and never looked back. Farrington took second ahead of George, Trevor Miller and Ricky McGuire
