PELKEY BREAKS THROUGH WITH USAC WIN AT CENTRAL ARIZONA RACEWAY
After a tough start to the year, Josh Pelkey’s season turned around Saturday night at Central Arizona Raceway as he ran off with the USAC Southwest Sprint Car feature event. Pelkey had a clean sweep of the evening, took the lead on the first lap of the main event, and hammered down until the checkered flag flew on the very fast speedway. Terry Churchwell claimed his first win of the season at Central Arizona Raceway and gained a few points on Ty Weidner. Nick Bruce crossed the line second in the AMA Mod Lite feature, but leader Anthony Platt drove off the top of the track, and didn’t re-enter on the front stretch as required for safety. Colton Hardy was the victor in the Mini Sprint feature.
After winning the Pole dash earlier in the evening, Pelkey shared the front row with Thomas Ogle. Pelkey stormed off into turn 1 leaving Ogle behind. Shon Deskins and RJ Johnson started pressuring Ogle for the second position as both of them got by. Pelkey was already off as Deskins and Johnson fought for second on the fast track. With only a handful of laps remaining, Johnson was able to sneak by Deskins as the leaders maneuvered through lapped traffic. Pelkey claimed the caution-free race over Johnson, Deskins, Bruce St James, and Mike Martin. Martin, Pelkey and Deskins were the heat race winners.
The Pure Stock feature had Terry Churchwell and Jason Pugliese on the front tow. Churchwell took the early lead with Ty Weidner and Ryan Eaden in tow. Weidner and Churchwell swapped the lead working their way through lapped traffic until Weidner made a costly mistake with only a couple laps remaining. Weidner slipped off the backstretch, and Churchwell took over command with Eaden waiting for Churchwell to slip up. Churchwell took the caution-free win over Eaden, Yuma AZ driver Joey Essary with an impressive third place finish, Weidner and Stephen Lee. Weidner and Lee were the heat race winners.
The Mod Lite feature rolled out with Adam Echter and Anthony Platt pacing the field. Platt stormed into the lead as the field had problems completing laps with single-car spins. The biggest hit of the night happened when Barry Levitt spun under caution, and Mark Hammill didn’t see Levitt and made hard contact. Both drivers walked away, but they were done racing for the evening. Platt resumed the lead, and looked to be on his way to the win. Instead, Platt slipped off the track, and didn’t re-enter on the front straight away, which is required for safety reasons. Nick Bruce took the win with Mike Martin in second. Josh Rivera, Nick Gann and Cody Taylor finished out the top 5. Weidner and Lee were the heat race winners.
Joe Scheopner and Colton Hardy raced off into turn 1 for the Mini Sprint feature and Hardy took the lead and never looked back. Scheopner was second over Dustin Cormany, Jacob Hawkins and Dave Van Ess in the caution-free feature. Scheopner won the heat race, while Cormany took the dash.
Racing continues at Central Arizona Raceway on Saturday June 29, featuring the SWDRA Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, X Mods, Desert Dwarf Cars, and the Renegades.
