WHITWELL DOUBLES DOWN AT CENTRAL ARIZONA RACEWAY
Tucson driver R.C. Whitwell etched his name in the new Central Arizona Raceway’s record book, as he claimed two main events in the same evening at the Raceway. Whitwell powered his Tahtinen Racing Engines #24 SWDRA Late Model to win the 25-lap feature, then hopped into his #96t IMCA Modified and drove to the win. In other action, Tony Martin claimed the Desert Dwarf Car feature, AJ Huebner claimed the X-Mod win and Ben Soboski took his first career Renegade feature win.
Wes Hall and Joey Moriarty lined up on the front row for the 25-lap SWDRA feature event. Moriarty jumped into the early lead, as Whitwell charged up from the third row. Whitwell jumped into the lead leaving Moriarty to battle with Brad Williams and Jake O’Neil. Whitwell survived the restarts and drove to the win over Moriarty, Williams, John Cornell and O’Neil. Jeremy Thornton and Bud Grossenbacher claimed the heat races.
As soon at Whitwell finished celebrating his Late Model win with the team, he was jumping into his Modified, and started on the front row with Mike Masters to his inside. Whitwell took charge and set sail on the field. Jason Noll, Ricky Thornton Jr and Cody Graham were moving up after starting a few rows back. Thornton’s great run ended as he came to a stop, and Noll fell back to Terry Belcher Sr with a very impressive save in turn 4. Noll rebounded, but wasn’t able to catch Whitwell. Whitwell cruised to the win over a fleet of crate motors driven by Noll, Graham, Belcher and Eric Center. Chad Falco, Noll and Whitwell were the heat race winners.
The X-Mod feature had excitement when AJ Huebner spun from the lead on the third lap. Trevor Miller spun to avoid Huebner as all cars survived to restart. Huebner restarted last and was on a mission as Gerry Glenn and Chris Caldwell battled hard for the lead. Glenn eventually took over the top spot, but Huebner was charging up and retook the lead. Huebner powered his way to the win over Glenn, Danny Curry, Miller and Jinger Kessler. Huebner won the heat race as well.
Justin Murphy and Rob Van Ness sat on the pole for the Dwarf Car feature. Tony Martin and Chad Steward provided the entertainment as they raced hard for the top position. Brian Stehr faded with problems on his dominant ride. Martin raced to the win with Stehr in tow. Jim Hock finished third ahead of Mike Strobl and Jeff Eckart. The heat races were won by Ryan Henesey, Stehr and Strobl.
Ben Soboski jumped to the early lead in the Renegade feature as Don Berner contended until a flat tire sent Berner to the pits. Soboski never looked back as he won over Brandy McCurdy, Berner, Virgil McArthur and Richard Bennett. McCurdy claimed the heat race.
Central Arizona Raceway is idle until July 20th when the IMCA Modifieds return along with the Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, X Mods, and Renegades.
