Tucson driver, RC Whitwell doubled down once again Saturday night at Central Arizona Raceway by winning both IMCA Modified main events. Anthony Madrid and Terry Churchwell claimed Pure Stock wins while Chris Caldwell and Brandon Farrington were victorious in the X Mod features. Mikey Soboski drove a borrowed car to the win in the Renegade division along with Chris McCurdy Jr taking the second win after Ben Soboski jumped a start. Finally Anthony Platt won the Mod Lite feature.
All of the divisions except the Mod Lites ran a 5pm main event, to finish the events from July 20, where Mother Nature decided she didn’t want to play nice with the racing.
Chad Ayers and Nate Warren led the field to the green flag, but RC Whitwell hardly took any time getting to the front. After several mishaps, Whitwell opened up a lead over Ricky Thornton Jr. Thornton tried getting around Whitwell, but it wasn’t meant to be as Whitwell won over Thornton, Jason Noll from the 19th starting position, Ayers and Chad Falco.
Robert Culbertson and Danny Price led the Pure Stocks to the green, but Price’s race was short lived as he took his car into the pits in the first few laps. Anthony Madrid, Matt Martinez and Terry Churchwell battled for the top spot until Churchwell took the scenic route off the track. Madrid held off Martinez for the win with Ty Weidner finishing third over Ryan Eaden and Kelsie Foley.
Chris Caldwell took off from the Pole Position and claimed his first win at Central Arizona Raceway. Trevor Miller finished second ahead of AJ Huebner, Duane Hogan and Terry Churchwell.
Mike Soboski drove from the outside front row to the win in the Renegade feature. Ben Soboski made it a Soboski 1-2 finish as he was second over Joe Peterson, Frank Outlaw and Zack Tate.
After a small break, the 7pm show was ready for action.
Anthony Platt jumped to the lead in the Mod Lite feature, and had Chaz Baca Jr all over his bumper. Baca threw everything but the kitchen sink to get by Platt, but settled for second. Brenden Priest was third over Josh Rivera and Adam Echter.
DJ Wood and Chad Ayers started on the front row for the IMCA Modifieds. Wood grabbed the lead with Ayers slipping up high. Wood continued to lead until RC Whitwell took the top spot away. Whitwell went on to claim the win over Eric Center, Wood, Jason Noll and Ricky Thornton Jr.
John Drake and Terry Churchwell shared the front row for the Pure Stocks. Churchwell grabbed the early lead with a great battle behind him for the top position. At several points, it looked like the top few cars could have all fit under a blanket. When the dust settled, Churchwell crossed the line first with Matt Martinez attached to his bumper in second. Anthony Madrid, Danny Curry and Joey Essary rounded out the top 5.
Trevor Miller and Michael Harrison shared the front row for the X Mod feature, but they were not able to hold off the Brandon Farrington machine as he raced to the win over Harrison, Nolan Morrow, Jason George and Danny Curry.
In the Renegades division, Jason Hamilton piloting the police car was blinding the crowd from the pole along with Virgil McArthur. Ben Soboski jumped to the lead and looked to be on his way to the win as he crossed the stripe first over Chris McCurdy Jr who started last. Unfortunately, Soboski jumped the start and was penalized moving McCurdy to the win over Jesse Johnson, Soboski, McArthur and Zack Tate.
Michelle Halfhill claimed the Renegade Powder Puff, while Kelsie Foley passed Becky Madrid on the last lap to win the Pure Stock Powder Puff.
